| Concert Reviews: |
“Your performances, as always, were incredible: simultaneously entertaining, hilarious, and educational. I appreciate the way your music conveys important messages in a fun and lighthearted manner and I am positive that the kids will never forget your catchy songs.” Hans Cole, Deputy Director, Roots & Shoots USA, Jane Goodall Institute
“Whether he's singing about prophetic RVs, revolutionary cows, or the power of wild places, Dana is a master at mixing playful humor with social and environmental activism. His voice is beautiful, his songs are funny, relevant, and thought provoking. Backbone Concert Series, Vashon Island
“I saw Dana perform last night to an small audience that spanned three years old to eighty-five. He absolutely captivated everyone. Small girls, chins on hands, watched without moving. Teenaged boys stopped showing off. Older women clapped their hands. Every face had a smile. When it came to the sing-alongs, even the stuffiest old guys bellowed out the words. This is fun music but with serious messages about how we live.” Ronald Mayo, Lopez Island, WA
“Dana's musical talent combined with his witty lyrics and delightful presence make his performances memorable and highly enjoyable.” Dorle Sholz, Shorebird Festival, Homer, AK
“I was absolutely blown away by Dana….His music is such a splendid blend of rock, folk, humour, environmentalism, political critique, and more tongue-in-cheek humour!” Sean Lymworth, Peacezilla Productions, Vancouver, Canada
“Dana Lyons, perhaps best known for his 1996 hilarity “Cows With Guns,” is a remarkable talent….Lyons’ like hasn’t been experienced since Tom Lehrer held forth exclusively in the 60s….Lyons’ talent, his travels around the world, his deep commitment to the environment…and a highly giving manner have produced more than a major entertainer. He’s one helluva human being.” Bob Sanders, Whatcom Independent, Bellingham, WA

Ride the Lawn
“Ought-to-be household name Dana Lyons returns with another finely crafted disc of sly social commentary, but while the front cover suggests a set of rib-ticklershe’s riding a lawnmower like a broncoit’s the pensive expression Dana wears while astride a tamed Deere on the back cover that more reflects the mood….He returns again and again to environmental issues, with heartfelt pleas on behalf of endangered species and tourist-trampled landscapes, delivered in carefully wrought songs filled with sights, sounds and smells.” Tom Petersen, Victory Review, September 2004
Circle the World
“Few people on earth top Jane Goodall for having both an important message and the scientific and moral authority to command attention and assent; few musical stars write or sing or live with the committed passion of Dana Lyons. Circle the World is a startling pairing, and a powerful CD. Goodall shares six stories from her life’s work with chimpanzees and ecological preservation in Africa that have, as their moral, the lesson that as the jungle and the chimps go, so go we all. She sees the planet’s fate in the frightened eyes of baby chimps, and African children; in the bewilderment of animals in zoos, and our human elders. These visions are shared by Dana Lyons, who intersperses the stories with solo, acoustic performances that hammer out danger, hammer out a warning. He is working in the same vein that was heard on much of his recent album, Ride the Lawn: urgent warnings to kick the bad habits that destroy each other and ourselves. Production and packaging are first rate, and of course the Jane Goodall Institute benefits.” Tom Petersen, Victory Review, June 2005

“An out-of-control Johnny Cash.” The Western Front, Western Washington University, Bellingham, WA
“Every movement has its minstrel. The unions had Woody Guthrie. The peace movement had Phil Ochs. The environmental movement has Dana Lyons.” Captain Paul Watson, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society
Dana Lyons is the singer/songwriter best known for his dynamic performances and outrageous hit songs “Cows With Guns,” “RV” and “Ride The Lawn.” A global radio and web hit, “Cows With Guns” was #1 for the year on Dr. Demento, #2 on the Australian Country charts, #1 in Seattle and spent six months on the Irish Top 40.
Bringing together a mix of comedy, ballads and love songs, Dana’s sharp wit and beautiful voice have him performing at concert halls, festivals, conventions, fundraisers and universities across the US and around the world. Dana’s music style includes a bit of everything; his biggest radio hit, “Cows With Guns,” receives crossover radio play on country, rock, alternative, community, college and oldies radio stations worldwide. He has eight releases to date, including his latest, Three Legged Coyote, released in November 2009.
Dana has toured in 46 of the 50 American states, around the East Coast of Australia and across Ireland, England, New Zealand, Mexico, Kazahkstan and Siberia. Dana performs at festivals ranging from Farm Aid with Willie Nelson and Neil Young to the Harley Davidson Festival in Sturgis, South Dakota where he shared the stage with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steppenwolf, Nazareth and Blue Oyster Cult. His policy of “I’ll play anywhere once” has landed Dana gigs on a tropical island in the Great Barrier reef of Australia, an Irish Pub in Beijing and the Hanford Nuclear Waste Dump in his home state of Washington.
Two of Dana’s songs have been made into award-winning illustrated books: Cows With Guns, published by Penguin (winner of the Bullitzer Prize), and The Tree, published by Illumination Arts. The Tree was endorsed by Dr. Jane Goodall, has forwards by Pete Seeger and Julia Butterfly Hill and has won numerous awards.
Dana’s songs have been re-recorded by many artists, but perhaps his highest honor as a songwriter came when Pete Seeger called him to get the music for Dana’s song “I am an Animal.” Dana has shared the stage with many notable performers including Willie Nelson, Neil Young, Dave Matthews, John Mellencamp, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Pete Sears of Jefferson Starship, Stephen Stills, River Phoenix, Nickel Creek, Country Joe McDonald, Utah Phillips and John Trudell.
Dana was born in Kingston, New York. He graduated from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. He lives in a nice garage in Bellingham, Washington, with his cat Oliver. His astrological sign is Taurus.

CIRCLE THE WORLD WITH JANE GOODALL
Dana Lyons and Dr. Jane Goodall’s recent release, Circle the World, is a beautiful mix of Jane Goodall telling stories of chimpanzees and working for peace and environmental justice and Dana’s inspiring ballads. Dana met Dr. Goodall when she wrote an endorsement for his award-winning book The Tree. Dana performs regularly at Dr. Goodall’s youth activist program, Roots and Shoots. The title track, “Circle the World,” celebrates Dr. Goodall’s campaign to have folks all over the world parade with giant peace dove puppets on United Nation’s World Peace Day, held yearly on September 21st.

ANIMAL
Dana’s song “I Am An Animal” is performed by Pete Seeger.
OUR STATE IS A DUMPSITE: Washington’s State Song?
Thirteen co-sponsors in the Washington State Legislature introduced Dana’s tune “Our State is a Dumpsite” to be the official state song. Sadly, it was struck down in the rules committee. Still, "Dumpsite" was included as one of the 75 most important songs in Washington State’s official centennial songbook, Washington’s Songs and Lore.
“Dumpsite” also appeared in the soundtrack to Robert Redford’s movie documentary The WIPP Trail. Dana’s songs have also been included in other movie and television documentary soundtracks, including “Drop of Water” in the Canadian film documentary "No Surrender and" “June is a Comin’” in the TV documentary Fishing Families.
